Hugh Letheren

On Tuesday we had a real treat for the club, a visit from Hugh Letheren who is shall we say, jsut a little enthusiastic about water-droplet photography!

Not only did he talk us through his own journey and set ups he has used, along with some of the history around this style of photography, he was also brave enough to bring his equipment and perform a live demonstration!

More of Hugh's work can be seen on his website: http://hugh.letheren.org/

Monochrome Competition

The first evening of the new year and we were off with a cracker... it was fantastic to see so many high-quality prints in the monochrome competition and I did not envy the judges task of attempting to pick a winner!

Congratulations go to Janet Downes who took first place with her beautifully crafted image of some flowers, second place went to Richard Lawrence with his slightly creepy shot of an art installation, and third place goes to Jon Burtoft with his imaginative take on Smeaton's Tower.

Geraldine Lamb School of Dance

We were fortunate enough to be joined for the evening by the very talented girls from the Geraldine Lamb School of Dance.

The evening was planned around the use of second-curtain flash, this allowed us to capture some movement along with freezing the action and thus adding some dynamic aspects to the shot.

Of course, with multiple photographers all lining up for a shot we could not use the obvious approach of controlling the flash with the camera as this would only allow one person to shoot at a time.  To get around this, we decided to use some good old-fashioned time management, with one person in control of the flash... a shout to ask the girls to start their dance move, at this point the photographers would also start their exposures, and at the agreed point we would fire the flash.

While this is certainly not a perfect solution, we had it timed well enough by the end of the evening so that everyone was getting shots they were happy with!

Patterns In Nature

The first installment of our in-house four-part competition! This first competition was titled "Patterns In Nature" and we had a plethora of wonderful shots to choose from, but in the end first prize went to Andy with his shot of cactus, 2nd place goes to Jon for his black-and-white trees and third place went to Tim with patterns in the sand.

Well done to everyone who entered, some fabulous entries on display!

Pixel Stick

What a great evening! Peter and Bina put on a great presentation showing how their Pixel Stick works along with showing us some example images of what can be achieved before letting us loose with it to create a few images of our own... it was fantastic to see the members of the club working together to create some interesting and dynamic images!

Rapson Cup

Some stunning images in the competition this year, and I don't think that anyone could be called a loser but congratulations to Andy for securing both first and second place with "Evening Calm" and "Cotehele House" respectively, while Janet scooped third place with "The Co-op".

The Rapson Cup is a "Triptych" competition which requires 3 images that work together to form a whole panel, a tricky task as each image should stand up in it's own right as well as contribute to the panel.

Hedgecombers Food Photography

What a fantastic evening with Janie from Hedgecombers!

We started with a look through her food photography back-catalog where she showed us how her photography has progressed over her career along with lots of interesting tit-bits that are crucial for creating great foodie-photos.

We then ran through a demo set-up where we tethered the camera so we could analyze the image and discuss exactly what was working and what wasn't, then finally we got the chance to break out our own dishes to create our own shots.

For more details on Janie's work head on over to her website, https://hedgecombers.com/

Helen's Exhibition

Our very own Helen is putting on an Exhibition at The Wharf in Tavistock alongside her artist friend, called “Under The Same Sky” it features skyscapes from Rosie along with wildlife images from Helen.

It’s on for the whole of November - the best thing is that there is a cafe at The Wharf, easy parking and it’s ideal if anyone was Christmas shopping in Tavy to pop in.  Anyone really keen is welcome to the private view on November 5th 4 - 6 pm.

Hope that some of you can support Helen!
